First off.
Happy May Day Holiday.
Still a valid labour
"festival"... for now, eh ?
Highly recommend Peter
Diamandis' latest posting
on LinkedIN titled "Cashier
jobs will vanish. This is
how workers should prepare
for what's next." as
well as his article on his
personal website titled "The First
Jobs To Go".
However much I agree with
his comments, I have to
take exception to some of
his premises.
Although most will
agree with the basis of
Peter's article, some will
ask: "But what about
cashier/clerks working in a
clothing related or some
such boutique?" Customers
go there because they want
an opinion on what “suits”
them best. They are not
interested in a voiceless
catalogue. So let's
not generalize, eh.
Certainly for a majority
(?), there will be a need
to evaluate one’s strengths
and weaknesses and
attitudes and interests.
Myers-Briggs testing comes
to mind. And these
people, unemployed though
they may be, will still
keep a positive mental
attitude and work at
finding either another job,
and/or retraining to get
new skill sets, and/or
strike out on their own as
entrepreneurs, especially
once they discouver one fo
the secrets of true
happiness... working at
something that you love.
For such like-minded
people, take a look at
Sylvia Perez's "old"
article titled "8 Lessons
Learned After Losing Job".
It will give you some
practical guidance on
handling such a situation.
For many though, it will be
enough to get a UBI
(universal basic income,
a.k.a. no work, salary
anyways).
Hopefully most will analyse
their life and get a
meaning to their lives.
Regrettably, many will
wonder if it will be (its)
only so much wasted effort
because of the current (and
future?)
economic-political-business
climate (financial crisis
and bail-outs, etc.) that
makes them wonder if we are
not already in a 1984-style
environment.
I for one am not sitting on
the sidelines.
And that brings me to
question why Peter's
"Abundance 360" program
caters only to CEOs of
$10M-$10B companies. What,
are they the only ones with
“smarts”? The only ones
capable of leading us
common people who have no
“value”? Because they make
a lot of money? Gimme a
break. Life is not only
about money. Remember that
the majority of innovations,
and subsequent jobs, come
from extraordinary common
people at startups and/or
SMEs.
AIs are here to stay, and
will only get smarter and
more pervasive in our
current capitalist
environments since it is
mainly a way for corporate
monoliths to ensure even
more profits, irrespective
of the impacts on our
Global Village spaceship
earth.
Growth AND maturity of our
civilization is what is
important... and paramount
to ensure our survival...
all of us, not just a few.
